Protein helps keep me full, and it does not cause a spike in blood sugar levels. I started incorporating lean protein sources like chicken, turkey, tofu, and fish into my diet. I also started snacking on protein-rich foods like nuts, seeds, and Greek yogurt. One of the biggest challenges that I faced was giving up my sweet treats. However, I found some alternatives that have been helpful in managing my blood sugar levels. Instead of reaching for candy or ice cream, I started snacking on fresh fruits like apples, berries, and melons. I also found sugar-free snacks like sugar-free pudding and sugar-free jello to be helpful in satisfying my sweet tooth. Another food swap that I made was to switch out processed foods for whole foods. Whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein sources, and healthy fats are packed with nutrients that are beneficial for both me and my growing baby. Plus, they do not contain added sugars, salts, and unhealthy fats that are prevalent in processed foods. Overall, managing gestational diabetes has been challenging, but with the right food choices, it is manageable. By incorporating more complex carbohydrates, lean protein sources, fresh fruits, and whole foods into my diet, I have been able to keep my blood sugar levels in check. As always, it is crucial to talk to your healthcare provider about any concerns that you may have regarding gestational diabetes and any changes that you make to your diet.
